Q: What is the BIGGEST word you've seen used in a book lately - that made you stop and look it up? Might as well leave the definition & book too.

A: I was reading Death of a Salesman when I saw the word obstreperous. I find it fun to say but until a few days ago I had no idea what it meant. So here's the definition: noisily and stubbornly defiant

ARC Review: The Lost Prince by Julie Kagawa

The Lost Prince by Julie Kagawa
Published: October 23, 2012
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Pages: 379
Series: Call of the Forgotten #1
My Rating:  5 of 5 stars

Synopsis: Don’t look at Them. Never let Them know you can see Them.

That is Ethan Chase’s unbreakable rule. Until the fey he avoids at all costs—including his reputation—begin to disappear, and Ethan is attacked. Now he must change the rules to protect his family. To save a girl he never thought he’s dare to fall for.

Ethan thought he had protected himself from his older sister’s world—the land of Faery. His previous time in the Iron Realm left him with nothing but fear and disgust for the world Meghan Chase has made her home, a land of myths and talking cats, of magic and seductive enemies. But when destiny comes for Ethan, there is no escape from a danger long, long forgotten.

My name is Ethan Chase. And I may not live to see my eighteenth birthday.

My Review: It's no secret that I love Julie Kagawa's writing. The Iron Fey series is one of my favorite series and The Immortal Rules is my favorite vampire book. So imagine my reaction when I got approved for this book. There was screaming, shouting, happy dances, and weird looks from people around me. While reading this I could barely contain myself. It was just that good.

Going into this book I had high expectations. They were very high. After reading the Iron Fey series and her new book I expected this book to be through the roof with its awesomeness. Well The Lost Prince went beyond my expectations. It blew the roof clean off of the house and touched the sky.

In the first part of the book I'll admit it. I didn't really like Ethan because of how he treated everyone but as the story went on I started to understand why Ethan was such a jerk to everyone. I'm not excusing his behavior but I understand where it's coming from. Ethan's POV was a nice change from Meghan's. It was much darker but I loved it. By the end of the book you could really see that Ethan had changed.

Another character I just loved was Kenzie. She was just so refreshing. She wasn't whiny or anything like that. She was willing to take risks and she didn't give up easily. I'm ready to read more about her. I'm also so glad there wasn't an Ethan-Kenzie-Keirran love triangle. I think it would have been kind of awkward if your nephew liked the same girl you did.

Oh and how could I forget Keirran? For those of you that read The Iron Knight you might remember him. Again I say I'm so glad that he didn't fall in love with Kenzie and that he has his own forbidden romance. Following in his parent's footsteps? I'm really looking forward to seeing how he's going to deal with his unusual glamour and his promise.

The best part (well not the best part) was reading about all the characters from the Iron Fey series. Meghan, Ash, Puck, and Grimalkin all made appearances but as much as I love them I'm kind of glad the story wasn't all about them. It was nice to have some new characters mixed with the old ones.

If you weren't really into the romance in the Iron Fey do not fear! The Lost Prince has some romance but it doesn't focus on that. Even though this book was in the same world as the Iron Fey it felt different. There were new threats and they are much creepier than the Iron fey. I was on the edge of my seat whenever the Forgotten appeared. I'm really looking forward to reading more about them.

The ending was great. I'm not a fan of cliffhangers and this isn't cliffhanger but it still leaves you wanting more. So I guess now I must wait for the next book. Supposedly its called The Traitor Son and I really hope it doesn't mean what I think it means. This wait is going to practically unbearable.

*I received this book via Netgalley. Thank you!

What's Next? #10

 What's Next? Hosted by IceyBooks
What's Next is a weekly meme hosted by IceyBooks!
Here's how it works:
-Every Thursday select three-five books (not too many, not too little!) that you want to read but can't decide which one to read first.
-Post the cover, and if you want, the synopsis or even a random line from the book, for each of your selections.
-At the end of your post, ask readers to vote on which one you should read next!

The Raven Boys
by Maggie Stiefvater

“There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.”

It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive.

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her.

His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

From Maggie Stiefvater, the bestselling and acclaimed author of the Shiver trilogy and The Scorpio Races, comes a spellbinding new series where the inevitability of death and the nature of love lead us to a place we’ve never been before.

My Obsession With Quotes

So while reading Looking for Alaska by John Green the other day I realized something.

Icon
You know how Pudge is obsessed with famous last words? Well I am obsessed with reading quotes. Now I know that you might be thinking that most people like reading quotes but do most people spend hours looking up quotes?

I made entire quizzes about quotes. I can recite quotes off the top of my head. I have quotes on my iPod. I have a quote as my background. I have a quote app. You probably all know about Goodreads right? If you don't I suggest you check it out because it is the best readers website I've ever been on. Guess how I found it! Looking up Maximum Ride and Mortal Instruments quotes. I even put quotes in my About Me on my blog. Ah quotes what would I do without you?

It isn't just quotes from books I've read that I'm obsessed with either. My favorite quote isn't from any book I've read (in fact I don't think its from a book).

I guess you're probably wondering what my all time favorite quote is now that I've mentioned it and it would have to be “Fairy tales are more than true; not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.”― G.K. Chesterton

Does anyone else have this obsession with quotes or just an obsession like Pudge's?

Review: Looking for Alaska by John Green

Looking for Alaska by John Green
Published: December 28, 2006
Publisher:
Speak
Pages: 256
My Rating: 5 of 5 stars

Synopsis: Before. Miles "Pudge" Halter's whole existence has been one big nonevent, and his obsession with famous last words has only made him crave the "Great Perhaps" (Francois Rabelais, poet) even more. He heads off to the sometimes crazy, possibly unstable, and anything-but-boring world of Culver Creek Boarding School, and his life becomes the opposite of safe. Because down the hall is Alaska Young. The gorgeous, clever, funny, sexy, self-destructive, screwed-up, and utterly fascinating Alaska Young, who is an event unto herself. She pulls Pudge into her world, launches him into the Great Perhaps, and steals his heart.

After. Nothing is ever the same.

My Review: John Green you blew me away yet again. I hope you never ever stop writing because you are just pure awesomeness and I love your books.

I can't believe I waited this long to read this book. Just what was wrong with me? Ok well there's actually a story behind that but don't laugh. When I first heard of this book maybe in the seventh grade? I don't remember anymore. Anyway I hadn't read the back but for some reason I thought that Looking for Alaska was about this boy who gets lost in the woods looking for the state Alaska then he dies. Don't ask me why I just did. So I never even thought about picking this book up because I just assumed that it was about a person literally looking for Alaska. Yeah it wasn't anything like that.

I absolutely loved Pudge and Alaska. Especially Alaska. I just I'm having trouble forming words to describe how much I loved them. I find it extremely difficult to write reviews about books I absolutely loved.

Icon

I just loved the entire book. Especially the last half because I know this might sound weird but I love figuring out why people died. I find it so interesting so I was sitting on the edge of my seat during most of the second half.

I can't believe how realistic the characters were and just how real everything seemed.Even the supporting characters were great. Looking for Alaska is not a light read. It deals with many different things like death, religion, guilt, learning to live with consequences. The characters also frequently drink and smoke even though they are underage and there is also talk about sex. Definitely not for younger kids.

I can't find one thing I disliked about this book. Everyone must go out and read this now if you haven't already. Now if you excuse me I'm off to go read all of John Green's other books.

Review: Painted Blind by Michelle A. Hansen

Painted Blind by Michelle A. Hansen
Published: May 3, 2012
Publisher:
Self Published
Pages:
340
My Rating:
2 of 5 stars

Synopsis: Seventeen years old and agoraphobic, Psyche Middleton vows her dad will never see the risqué photos she took during a summer modeling stint abroad, but one of them ends up on a billboard in her Montana hometown. Now everyone—especially her dad—can see it. And yet, somehow, those are the mundane things in her life. That is because she is about to fall unexpectedly, head-over-heels in love with Erik, a mysterious young man who rescues her from a crowd of admirers, and who she’s actually never seen because…he can make himself invisible.

As strange as this may seem, it’s about to get even stranger. Erik takes her to his palace in an idyllic kingdom, and she is swept into the beauty and culture of his world, but his affection has one condition: she may not see him. Overtaken, intrigued, and not wholeheartedly believing he's real, she is going to have to decide if she can love him blindly. Because if she can’t, she may lose him forever.

A wild, romantic adventure that travels at breakneck speed, Michelle A. Hansen’s debut is a fantastical journey filled with laughter, danger, and the indomitable power of love.
Painted Blind reminds us that one can overcome seemingly insurmountable odds with fortitude and a little luck and is a testament to the fact that real love is worth fighting for.

My Review: I'm a sucker for retellings and I love mythology so this book sounds perfect for me right? Well let's just say this wasn't what I was expecting.

I've read the Eros and Psyche myth so I knew the basic storyline. I didn't have a problem with that part of the book much. My main problem was with Psyche. I don't remember ever reading about someone like her ever. She doesn't like to show off that she's beautiful yet she's a model. Um don't models show off their beauty? She wears men's clothes because they don't fit her properly and when she has to wear woman's clothes she complains! Sorry if the clothes actually fit you right and I'm terribly sorry that you're so beautiful. She also grouped all men into one category. She assumes that all men that meet her want to sleep with her and that men can't control themselves because they are men. What? Just what? I'm sorry but I do not believe that.

I also did not like "Erik" or Eros or whoever this guy is. He was creepy! He follows her around and breaks into her house and then shows up in her car. Somehow she falls in love with him and then he won't let her see him. If I had never seen this guy I would start to wonder if I was going insane. She seemed so accepting of how there were Gods and Goddesses.

While reading I would get confused whenever it changed scenes or whenever Psyche would fall asleep and then wake up right after that. It just jumped around too much for me. I just couldn't get into the story either. I didn't care about Psyche in fact the best part of the book was the last part when it wasn't from her POV.

At least the mythology was enjoyable. I really liked the trip into Hades and I think my favorite character was Persephone. I guess this book just wasn't my cup of tea. I'm just not a fan of love at first sight or instant love (because she doesn't see him when she falls in love with him).

Liebster Blog Award (Again)!

I've been tagged for the Liebster Blog Award again but this time I was tagged by 2 B Read. Thank you! Don't forget to check out their blog!

The Rules:
  1. Thank and link back to the giver
  2. Answer the award giver's questions
  3. Nominate 5 other blogs that have fewer than 200 follower
  4. Ask 5 questions for one's nominees to answer
Q&A
When typing something up on Word do you prefer Calibri or Times New Roman? Does it matter?
To me it actually does. I love the Times New Roman font (probably because I'm so used to it) and I really don't like Calibri. I always type in Times New Roman on Word.

Do music and books go together for you a lot? If so name a song that goes with a book purely by lyrics, and another by association (in other words it doesn't make sense that the book goes with the song but for you it does anyway) If not, do you need it to be completely silent to read or can there be background noise?
It depends on what I'm reading. If I'm reading a challenging book or a book for school then it has to be completely silent but when I'm reading just for fun then it doesn't matter. I actually like matching songs to books. I think I'd have to say that Haunted by Taylor Swift goes with The Infernal Devices because I think it perfectly describes Will and Tessa and even Jem. If your Team Will then you'll probably see the connection I made. Maybe? Now I really want to listen to that song.

Do you have a favorite book? Or do you hate the idea of having to choose and avoid questions like this at all costs?
I have multiple favorites so I guess I do try to avoid these questions. I guess I would have to say that Clockwork Angel is my favorite book at the moment. It's just so hard to choose!

Do you like looking at quotes from past books you've read? Does it make you want to read them again?
I spend hours on Goodreads just looking up quotes. I actually found Goodreads because I was looking up quotes. It does make me want to read them again. Especially the ones with really sad or meaningful quotes.

How long does it typically take you to read a book? (avg 400+ pages)
It depends on how much time I have and if I like the book. During the school year I have absolutely no time so probably a week or two. During the summer it would probably take me a day or two.

My Questions
Why did you decide to start a blog?

Do you judge a book by its cover?

If you could write a book what would it be about?

Have you always been a reader? If not then what book got you into reading?

Would you rather read one absolutely amazing book your entire life or read books that were only ok or bad for the rest of your life?

I Nominate
Downright Dystopian
The Humble Watermelon
Leopard Kitty Girl Books
Lov'in Literature
A Book Paradise

Q: What hyped up book do you think was not worth all the talk?

A: I am not a fan of Shatter Me at all. I really wish I hadn't read it. Shadow and Bone is another book that I wasn't very fond of. I mean I sort of liked it but I don't think it is worth all the talk. The Fallen series also does not deserve all the hype. Oh and how could I forget Twilight?

Have you heard the news? Yes? No? Maybe?

Well the release date for the Divergent movie is March 21, 2014! Who else is excited? I know I am! Who will they cast as Tris? Or more importantly who will they cast as Four? This is like the biggest news since the TMI movie!

I have already decided that I am going to the midnight premiere. It will happen. Will you go?

Hidden
by Sophie Jordan

Jacinda was supposed to bond with Cassian, the "prince" of their pride. But she resisted long before she fell in love with Will—a human and, worse, a hunter. When she ran away with Will, it ended in disaster, with Cassian's sister, Miram, captured. Weighed down by guilt, Jacinda knows she must rescue her to set things right. Yet to do so she will have to venture deep into the heart of enemy territory.

The only way Jacinda can reach Miram is by posing as a prisoner herself, though once she assumes that disguise, things quickly spiral out of her control. As she learns more about her captors, she realizes that even if Will and Cassian can carry out their part of the plan, there's no guarantee they'll all make it out alive. But what Jacinda never could have foreseen is that escaping would be only the beginning....

Loyalties are tested and sacrifices made in the explosive conclusion to Sophie Jordan's Firelight trilogy.

Sweet Venom
by Tera Lynn Childs

Grace just moved to San Francisco and is excited to start over at a new school. The change is full of fresh possibilities, but it’s also a tiny bit scary. It gets scarier when a minotaur walks in the door. And even more shocking when a girl who looks just like her shows up to fight the monster.

Gretchen is tired of monsters pulling her out into the wee hours, especially on a school night, but what can she do? Sending the minotaur back to his bleak home is just another notch on her combat belt. She never expected to run into this girl who could be her double, though.

Greer has her life pretty well put together, thank you very much. But that all tilts sideways when two girls who look eerily like her appear on her doorstep and claim they're triplets, supernatural descendants of some hideous creature from Greek myth, destined to spend their lives hunting monsters.

These three teenage descendants of Medusa, the once-beautiful gorgon maligned by myth, must reunite and embrace their fates in this unique paranormal world where monsters lurk in plain sight.

Bewitching
by Alex Flinn

Bewitching can be a beast. . . .

Once, I put a curse on a beastly and arrogant high school boy. That one turned out all right. Others didn't.

I go to a new school now--one where no one knows that I should have graduated long ago. I'm not still here because I'm stupid; I just don't age.

You see, I'm immortal. And I pretty much know everything after hundreds of years--except for when to take my powers and butt out.

I want to help, but things just go awry in ways I could never predict. Like when I tried to free some children from a gingerbread house and ended up being hanged. After I came back from the dead (immortal, remember?), I tried to play matchmaker for a French prince and ended up banished from France forever. And that little mermaid I found in the "Titanic" lifeboat? I don't even want to think about it.

Now a girl named Emma needs me. I probably shouldn't get involved, but her gorgeous stepsister is conniving to the core. I think I have just the thing to fix that girl--and it isn't an enchanted pumpkin. Although you never know what will happen when I start . . . bewitching.

Cassandra Caravello is one of Renaissance Venice’s lucky elite: with elegant gowns, sparkling jewels, her own lady’s maid, and a wealthy fiancé, she has everything a girl could desire. Yet ever since her parents’ death, Cassandra has felt trapped, alone in a city of water, where the dark and labyrinthine canals whisper of escape.

When Cass stumbles upon a murdered woman—practically in her own backyard—she’s drawn into a dangerous world of courtesans, killers, and secret societies. Soon, she finds herself falling for Falco, a mysterious artist with a mischievous grin... and a spectacular skill for trouble. Can Cassandra find the murderer, before he finds her?
